AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN

It may come as quite a surprise to you that the most dangerous place on earth is sometimes your own home. Every year, millions of adults and children alike are injured in their own home, or the home of others, due to simple safety violations which could have been avoided. In fact, one of the leading causes of death among children under five years old is accidental drowning in backyard swimming pools.

SLIPPERY WHEN WET

Every year we receive many telephone calls from people who have been injured when they have fallen as a result of slipping on some substance on a floor in a public area. Likewise, people are frequently injured when they trip on a defective sidewalk or other surface which is in some way defective. When this happens to you, you have had what is known as a slip or trip and fall accident.

LANDLORDS: BEWARE OF DOG!

In the past several months, there has been a lot of media attention given to the case of Diane Whipple. Diane Whipple was a young woman who was brutally mauled and killed in her apartment complex by two massive rare breed dogs. One of the owners of the dogs was convicted for the manslaughter.

DOG BITE CASES - WHEN DOGS ARE NOT MAN'S BEST FRIEND

Just for the record, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I am a huge dog lover. They are my best friends. I have owned dogs all of my life and currently own two beautiful Golden Retrievers. But please let the record reflect that despite their domestic status, dogs are animals, and even the most trusted dog can inflict massive injuries on children and adults. I know - I have seen innocent children with missing ears, gaping holes in their faces, and gashes all over their body - caused by "friendly" dogs.

ANOTHER REASON NOT TO DRINK AND DRIVE

Since we have been old enough to understand the perils of drinking and driving, it has been drilled into our heads that not only is it illegal to drink and drive, but it is immoral, extraordinarily dangerous, and for lack of a better term, just plain stupid.

SAFETY IN THE FAST LANE

At the time of the Northridge earthquake in 1994, I was living in Santa Clarita but was working in the San Fernando Valley. After staying home for a few days, I finally went into the office in order to get some work done. As I attempted to come home, however, I got stuck in a traffic jam with thousands of cars not moving as a result of all of the collapsed bridges that connected the I-5 and the 14 freeways. I sat in my car for four hours with nowhere to go.

Please don't e-mail me to tell me how disgusting this article is and that I have ruined your appetite. I already know. But, what we must talk about today are injuries resulting from improper food preparation, contaminated food, and foreign substances in food.

PROTECTING OUR MOST CHERISHED POSSESSION - OUR FAMILY

Because I'm now in my forties, and told I'm "middle aged," I have been asking myself what are the most important things in my life. I'm fortunate enough to have good health, a flourishing career, financial independence, and close friends. Most importantly, however, is my family. I cherish them more than anything in this world and will do anything to protect their futures. Protecting my family includes making sure that if tragedy strikes, my family will be well taken care of.
